Join Kathy Kelly Praying for Peace Saturday

Kathy Kelly is here in NYC this weekend and praying for peace in Washington Square Park on Saturday, Sept. 7th, at 6:30 pm. As she shared it on Facebook, it looks like Catholic Worker is fine with others joining in. Kathy wrote:

Here in NYC, I'm a guest at Maryhouse Catholic Worker. Several of us have organized a vigil at Washington Square Park, 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 7, joining Pope Francis's call to oppose U.S. military strikes against Syria.

PLEASE NOTE: If you can't join that event, national Fellowship of Reconciliation is encouraging people to Pray for Peace in Syria. They have a lovely blog post with some suggested prayers: http://forusa.org/blogs/for/call-for-prayers-for-peace-syria/12409

Blessings and Peace hugs,

Summertime Peace

During our summer hiatus, we hope you are contacting your congressmember and senators on the healthcare issue. [We have taken no official NYFOR position, but core people believe single payer is best, with an affordable comprehensive public option being compromise second best -- an expanded, improved Medicare.]

Check the listserv or your email for messages from the NYFOR list for interim summertime information. Also, check out the national FORPeace.net blog (or some peace songs we've collected on YouTube.com). Peace to you and yours -- and to all.

Progressive Podcasting & Links

[At our February meeting Kate Anne provided information on progressive podcasting and we listened to a still pertinent 2005 Progressive Radio podcast of Fr. Roy Bourgeois being interviewed by Progressive Magazine editor Matthew Rothschild. We wanted to share some of Kate's information and suggestions based on her handout.]

You don't have to own an iPod to listen to/view podcasts. You can do so online and/or download them directly to your computer.

A Happy and Peace-Full New Year

Dear Peace Friends -- With the New Year starting on Thursday schedules have been thrown off so we are NOT able to meet this Thursday. We plan to resume regular meetings in February. (NOTE: this cessation does not affect committee meetings.) In lieu of our monthly member meeting. however, we are urging our members to continue their personal peace work this month and also to attend the Sunday, Jan. 11th Interfaith Service to End Torture at 3 p.m. at the Community Church on East 35th Street, just off of Park Avenue. This event is sponsored by the Metro NY Religious Campaign Against Torture and the event flyer is available at their site and by clicking here.

Happiness and peace in the New Year -- and always. Thank you for whatever you do for peace and justice.

Intro: New York FOR

New York Fellowship of Reconciliation -- NYFOR -- has been active in its present incarnation since the 1990s when it was re-established by Fr. John Dear, who was then serving as National FOR's Executive Director. For current information and a rundown of some of our history, see our listserv: our NYFOR Yahoo Group, and our online photos. We are expanding our web presence to include this blog to encourage communication and inspire participation from more people of faith who believe in peace, justice and nonviolence. Current focus, besides ending the Iraq occupation and working to prevent further assaults on peace, include stopping torture, working with United for Peace and Justice, documenting Songs for Peace, and planning a cultural peace presentation entitled Pieces of Peace.

NYFOR generally meets monthly on second Thursdays, 6:30 to 8:15 pm. We are grateful to our host, Church of the Village, 201 West 13th Street, NYC 10011, [NW Corner of 13th Street and 7th Avenue; for meetings enter side door]. For questions or more information, email New York FOR, write PO Box 7626, New York, NY 10150-7626, or phone 917 374 9679.
